Between 1,500 and 2,000 English Defence League (EDL) supporters, their largest turn out so far, arrived in Newcastle City Centre on 29th May to demonstrate against what they call the Islamification of Britain. There was a counter demonstration against the EDL by the Unite Against Fascism (UAF) who had approximately 1000 supporters.
EDL demonstrations elsewhere in the country have resulted in violence, between the EDL, UAF and police, however the Newcastle march was largely peaceful, with no incidents of note.
Prior to the official start, there where minor confrontations between the UAF and EDL, around Newcastle Central Station and the City Centre.
The main demonstrations were kept 150 meters apart in the Bigg Market area of Newcastle by four heavy police lines.
